How to use the dissertation word count calculator

Chapters that grow unchecked are a common reason dissertations run over the limit. A word budget keeps every section in proportion.

  1. Enter your total limitUse the limit in your handbook, not a rounded guess.
  2. Review the suggested splitCompare each chapter allowance with your project plan.
  3. Adjust for your designA qualitative study may need a longer analysis, while a theory-heavy one may need a longer literature review.
  4. Track as you writeCheck your running totals against the plan every week.

Typical chapter proportions

This is a common starting pattern, shown for a 10,000-word dissertation. Adjust it to your subject and structure.

ChapterSuggested shareWords
Introduction8 per cent800
Literature review27 per cent2,700
Methodology15 per cent1,500
Results or findings20 per cent2,000
Discussion22 per cent2,200

Check what counts. The abstract, reference list, appendices, tables, figures, headings, citations and footnotes are treated differently across institutions. Many universities allow a tolerance, often around 10 per cent, but this varies, so confirm it in your handbook.

Where word counts go wrong

A bloated literature review

Covering everything you read uses up your allowance. Synthesis and critical evaluation matter more than coverage.

A thin methodology

Explain and justify your choices, not only describe them.

Repeating results in the discussion

The discussion should interpret your findings, not restate them.

Padding to reach the limit

Finishing slightly under is often acceptable if the work is complete. Check whether your department also sets a lower tolerance.

Combined chapters are possible. Some qualitative studies merge findings and discussion. If yours does, agree the structure with your supervisor and adjust the split.
