Null, alternative, directional and non-directional hypotheses
These four terms describe how hypotheses are structured. Most quantitative dissertations use a null and an alternative pair.

Direction affects your test. Directional hypotheses go with one-tailed tests and non-directional hypotheses with two-tailed tests. Two-tailed tests are the more cautious default, so use a one-tailed test only when you can justify the direction in advance.
Common hypothesis mistakes
Untestable wording
A statement such as “social media is bad for students” cannot be measured. Define your variables first.
Confusing hypotheses with questions
A research question asks and a hypothesis predicts. Keep both, but do not swap them.
Claiming to prove
Statistical tests support a hypothesis or fail to reject the null. They do not prove anything.
Forcing hypotheses onto qualitative work
Interview and thematic studies usually work from research questions. Check with your supervisor before adding hypotheses.
Set your threshold early. Decide your significance level, commonly 0.05, before you collect data, and state it in your methodology chapter.

One pair for each relationship or difference you intend to test. A long list of hypotheses can complicate your analysis, so keep them tied to your objectives.
Does every dissertation need a hypothesis?
No. Hypotheses suit quantitative and some mixed-methods studies. Exploratory and qualitative projects normally use research questions instead.
What is the difference between H0 and H1?
H0 is the null hypothesis, which states no effect or relationship. H1 is the alternative, which states that an effect or relationship exists.
What does “fail to reject the null” mean?
Your data did not provide enough evidence against the null hypothesis. It does not show that the null is true.
